Una breve reflexión sobre el resultado electoral del Uruguay

Un amigo me pregunta en este muro por qué celebro el triunfo del Frente Amplio uruguayo en Montevideo y Canelones ya que perdió 3 de 6 intendencias que tenía. Y agrega: “No se si hay mucho para festejar. El Frente retuvo ‘lo que debía’, por decirlo de alguna manera”.

Hace poco menos de un año, ganaba las elecciones uruguayas Luis Lacalle Pou, del conservador-liberalizado Partido Nacional, por muy escasa diferencia en una segunda vuelta. Hace tan solo seis meses asumió la presidencia y, con los matices propios del Uruguay, se inscribió en la ola neoliberal, antipopulista que sacude a una parte de América Latina.

Sabemos que un nuevo gobierno, cualquiera sea su signo, tiene una enorme capacidad de arrastre durante los primeros tiempos de su ejercicio, más el tiempo de respiro que -aunque es una norma no escrita suele respetarse- la oposición le otorga al nuevo gobierno. En ese marco, con una prensa que en todo el continente ha desempolvado un macarthismo de hace cuarenta años, pese al deterioro sufrido por muchos años de ejercicio del poder y ciertas fragilidades políticas, el Frente Amplio triunfa holgadamente en los dos principales distritos del país y, sobre todo, en Montevideo donde, mal que le pese a la memoria de don José Artigas, se concentra el poder político del país.

En política no se puede decir que solo logró lo que «debía» lograr. Cuando se produce una ola contrarrevolucionaria como la que se ha desplegado en nuestro continente, es importante conocer cuál es el grado, la profundidad de ese retroceso. Y el resultado del domingo deja la muy alentadora sensación de que ese retroceso no ha sido profundo, que en ese país tan especial, tan cercano y tan distinto, que es el Uruguay, aún alienta un espíritu mayoritario de mayor justicia social, de mayor igualdad y de independencia frente al imperialismo.

No es poco. Que la intendenta de Montevideo sea del Frente Amplio, que sea, además la hija de Villanueva Cosse, tan querido y respetado en este lado del Plata, que convoque a la unidad opositora contra el gobierno de los ricos, es para alegrarse, para mantener vivas las esperanzas de que la llama de la integración y de la independencia están vivas en el corazón de nuestros pueblos.
